Birth Doula

In nearly every culture throughout history, women have been surrounded and cared for by other women during childbirth. Artistic representations of birth throughout the world usually include at least two other women surrounding and supporting the birthing woman. One of these women is the midwife, who is responsible for the safe passage of the mother and the baby; the other woman or women are behind or beside the mother, holding her and comforting her. The modern birth doula is a manifestation of the woman beside the mother. 1

Evidence based research states that women who have doula support during labor experience:

  • 25% shorter labor
  • 60% reduction in epidural requests
  • 40% reduction in oxytocin use
  • 30% reduction in analgesia use
  • 40% reduction in forceps delivery
  •  50% reduction in the cesarean rate 2

As your birth doula I will be available to you as soon as you feel the need for me during labor. I will draw upon my knowledge and experience to support you both emotionally as well as physically.  I can provide reassurance and perspective to you (and your birth partner) make suggestions for labor progress and help with relaxation, imagery, massage, positioning and other techniques for comfort.

I will stay with you continuously throughout your labor and at least an hour or two after you birth your baby to assist with breastfeeding and any other needs you may have. I will visit you in your home at least once during the first two weeks after you give birth.  I will be on call for you and will provide 24 hour, seven days a week phone, text, email support throughout your pregnancy and post partum time.

As your doula I will meet with you (and your partner) during your pregnancy to become acquainted, to explore and discuss your priorities and concerns and to review and assist with birth preference plans if needed. I will want to become familiar with your plans and desires for labor, birth and postpartum. We will explore your own ideas, visions and dreams for your birth. We will talk about how we might best work together to help you have the positive, joyous birth experience you desire.

I have witnessed on many occasions and continue to be awe-filled as women who, when provided with a calm, relaxing, safe environment and continuous positive support, are able  to tap into their inner wisdom and allow their body to birth their baby exactly how it was meant to!

Every birth I attend is an amazing and unique event! As your doula I work for YOU! My goal is that you have the most beautiful, satisfying birth experience possible as defined by YOU!
